Last week was Erica’s birthday and so we thought we’d take advantage of some nice weather and make a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. It’s only 45 minutes drive from us so it’s kind of strange that we’ve never been before, but having just booked Louise and Alex’s 2012 wedding there we thought it would be nice to have a day out and see it. I imagine that you’re expecting to see lots of photos of sculptures, and if that’s the case then this blog post may disappoint. As much as I like sculptures, there’s something about taking photos of just a sculpture that doesn’t really do much for me…I think they’re best enjoyed in person in 3-d, and not by looking at a photograph of them. Overall it was nice to be out and about and as spring is coming on more and more each day I wanted to take a few photos to document this time of year and capture the great light we had. As you’ll see, one of the sculptures does feature in a couple of shots! After a lovely day we’re really looking forward to shooting a wedding there next year.

I liked the way the light was coming through this sculpture. You can see the whole sculpture in one of the photos below.

If you look closely at the bottom right of the photo, you can see a couple of sneaky Canadian geese creeping into the shot…like they didn’t know what they were up to!

At first I wondered if the windows being dirty would ruin the shot but then I think I actually quite like how some of the panes are a bit misty and some are quite clear…makes the view through the windows look like patchwork!

No sneaky Canadian geese on this one (as far as I can tell!)

Lately I’ve been getting into shooting high definition video. More and more it’s becoming a feature on DSLR cameras and it’s certainly something that I see myself getting into more. The use of cameras like ours- the Canon 1D mkIV and Canon 5d MkII- to film video is starting to become more mainstream in the movie industry too and is already being used in the indie film industry. The entire season finale of House was shot using the 5D mkII, there are a number of big time Hollywood film producers looking seriously at integrating them into the way they shoot movies, and last (and probably least)- Charlotte Church’s latest video was shot entirely with 5D MkII cameras. Why are cameras essentially designed for photography causing such a stir in the film industry? For a number of reasons. The low light capabilities of cameras such as ours exceed those of video cameras, the potential to shoot at wide apertures is much greater with SLRs in comparison to any HD video camera currently available (and so enables shallow depth of field), and the great variety of lenses that Canon SLR users have at their disposal adds flexibility. SLRs have their drawbacks for video though, one being that the ergononics of the SLR have been designed with the needs of the photographer in mind, and they’re not well-suited to shooting video handheld. The market is catching up though. and there are now a whole range of rigs available that aim to provide stability to SLR users shooting handheld video.

A few days ago I was about to make Gordon Ramsay’s cod and tomato chowder recipe, and I thought, ‘Why not make a short video of it at the same time?’ It took me twice as long as normal to actually make the chowder- having to think about things from the director’s point of view, having to do things in one take (given that you can only chop a piece of celery once, so you have to do it right the first time!), ‘pulling’ focus, all the while making sure you don’t overcook the food while you’re busy with the camera! For the benefit of those without the knowledge of videography speak, ‘pulling’ focus is basically just the process of keeping focus (manually) as you move the camera around. And it’s not easy, especially when the plane of focus can at times be less than an inch deep at wide apertures, and all you’ve got is a 3″ screen to monitor the video. If you watch the credits at the end of films and you see the job of ’1st AC’ ( 1st Assistant Camera) or ‘Focus Puller’, you now know what they do….the cameraman (or camerawoman!) shoots, and his/her 1st AC is stood at the side of the camera watching the scene on a monitor and focusing the lens manually as required. Generally, people shooting film on their SLR cameras have to do all the various jobs themselves- shooting the video, pulling the focus, recording the sound.

So anyway, I thought I’d post the video here. I edited it down to just over 2 minutes thus the title, ‘Cod & Tomato Chowder in 2 Minutes’. I thought it might get a few more people reading this post if they saw the title in disbelief at somebody who could make cod chowder in 2 minutes! The video was shot with my Canon 1D MkIV with my 50mm f1.2L set at an aperture of f2.0. Shutter speed was kept to 1/50 second to fit the frame rate of 25 frames per seconds, as shooting at 25 frames per second creates the classic look of video shot on film. The few bits of live sound were taken from a separate Zoom H4N stereo sound recorder, later synced to the video using DualEyes. Video editing was done in Apple’s Final Cut Pro, and then finally a few effects added in Photoshop CS4 Extended. I was amazed that you could process video in Photoshop and I’ll be adding a tutorial to the blog to cover just some of the things you can do in Photoshop with the video you shoot with your SLR.

So- popcorn ready, and roll. (You can view this video full screen to get the full high definition effect- just click the little icon at the bottom far right).

We’ve been waiting a while to share this good news because we wanted to wait for the actual issue of the magazine to be published, but finally we can now reveal that Christian Ward Photography has been chosen by Brides Magazine to to be their one and only wedding photographer for Derbyshire county in their 2010 wedding directory! It’s a big deal for us on four counts.

1. Brides Magazine is the UK’s no.1 bridal magazine.
2. Whilst the vast majority of wedding directories feature long lists of suppliers in each category, Brides Magazine this year have chosen to pick exclusively just one supplier per category, per county.
3. This wedding directory has been put together based on quality. The magazine employed a team of researchers who trawled websites across the UK looking for the best.
4. It’s only been a few months since You & Your Wedding magazine asked us if they could feature our photographs of Fran & David’s Northamptonshire wedding.

Seeing the satisfaction of our clients when they see their photographs is the greatest reward for us, but it’s like the icing on the cake when we also get recognition from the wedding industry itself!

Why is that particularly important to us? Well, turn to page 66 of the latest issue and you’ll find 4 pages of our photographs from Francesca & David’s lovely wedding at Cranford Hall last year. Miranda, the editor of Cosmo Bride and You & Your Wedding approached us a few months ago having seen our photographs, and asked if they could run a ‘Real Wedding’ Feature using our photos…and the rest is history, as they say! Thanks again to Fran and David for the information they provided to Miranda for the write-up. Here it is, beginning with us getting the header image on the contents page!

It’s about time for another Vintage Canada post- I’m slowly working my way through my photos from our last trip over to Canada back in October 09! I’ve had a really good response to my vintage-inspired processing and so I’ve been searching out the photos from our trip that best suit this kind of treatment. I’ve also coupled them with some cool borders I came across the other day. Anybody wanting to see previous posts of Vintage Canada photos can see them here, here and here! Anyway, on to the photos…the first one is the now defunct Coalmont Hotel in Coalmont BC- an old mining town, population approximately 100! We stayed in this tiny but beautiful town nestled by the Tulameen River. The second photo down is taken from the old gravel road we drove on (for hours!) to get to Coalmont. We passed through lots of ranching country, with plenty of old barns. The remaining photos were all taken around Tofino on Vancouver Island.

Back in October 2009 Erica and I took one of our beloved trips to Canada. Having been so busy with weddings since then, we’ve had little time to look through all of our many photos from our holiday but this weekend I managed to sift through a few and identify some favourites. I’ve got a few plans for the photos but for now I’ve been experimenting with post-processing to give them a vintage, old film appearance- especially since it seems to suit the subject matter; much of our journey took us through the old, virtually untouched interior of British Columbia. Let us know what you think! I’ve posted a few vintage-styled photos from our most recent Canada trip before for anybody wanting to see more!

Erica and I love music and we’ve got some great concerts lined up this year. We’ve already seen John Mayer once this year in Manchester, we’re due to see him again in Birmingham in May, we’re set to see Jamie Cullum in Sheffield in a few months, and then a few days ago we took a trip down to The Big Smoke to see another of our favourites playing a special gig in a very special venue. By sheer stroke of luck we managed to snap up 2 tickets to see Nerina Pallot play a one-off gig at The Pigalle; a small, 1940s styled cabaret club in Piccadilly. Having already seen Nerina Pallot in Buxton Opera House last year we knew we were in for a special evening and so we were very pleased when we got our own table for 2 right in front of the stage. If you’ve not yet discovered Nerina Pallot then consider this your wake up call! She’s on iTunes and Spotify so go and listen. She truly has the most extraordinary voice. Anyway, here are a few photos we took inside The Pigalle. Nerina was supported by Charlene Soraia (second photo down on the left)- also on iTunes and Spotify.

Erica and I spent quite a bit of time with Abi, our niece, as she put her new computer through it’s paces! I never thought I’d see the day where my brother let a PC over the threshold of his house, but I’m sure he’ll have Abi on an Apple Mac at some point soon. Meet Abigail Davinia Ward; already a computer whizz at just 5 years of age, she has announced her plans to be a photographer when she grows up!

There’s something special about the light of the west coast of North America. That soft, golden glow makes for great photography and I love the vibrant yet romantic atmosphere that it brings. Here are a few more photos from our recent trip to Canada where we got plenty of sunshine. All we need to do now is find a way to bottle it and bring it back!

This shot was taken just after the sun had dipped beneath the horizon. This particular place was in Tofino on Vancouver Island.

On our journey from an old ghost town where we stayed the night, we were passing through an old town called Hedley. On the way out we passed some abandoned vintage cars at the side of the road, so I decided to turn around and get some photos.

This was one of the other cars. As a number of people who have seen this photo have thought it’s a picture of an old advert, I thought I’d better point out that this actually is one of my photos- one that I made up to look like an old advert for the car!

This last one was taken on our journey through the interior of British Columbia on our way to Lillooet, a small logging and ranching town in the Fraser Canyon with a strong native American community and culture, being one of the main population centres of the St’at’imc (Lillooet Nation).

A few Blog posts ago I mentioned that Chris and I had taken a little break for our holidays. We had an absolutely wonderful time in Canada, doing a self-planned road trip across British Columbia and Alberta, starting in the breath-taking city of Vancouver and flying out from Calgary. We visited some beautiful places, and in addition to the perhaps more well-known Canadian landscape of forested mountain slopes and sparkling pristine lakes, we also drove through some amazing cowboy country, and visited some gorgeous First Nations villages. Here is just a teeny tiny sneak preview…I really hope to do a proper Blog post sometime in the not-too-distant future, but we have so many photographs to sort through that it could take me a while!

First up is a cool character who Chris met in Merritt, which is a really fantastic city, and Canada’s country music capital. He was just sitting on a street corner watching the world go by, and Chris asked if he would mind having his photo taken, to which he said a very obliging yes and told Chris some tales of his time working as a logger and rancher.

We made a brief stop at tiny Cook’s Ferry en route to Merritt. This is the home of a First Nations band of the Nlaka’pamux people. The church was absolutely beautiful and the crisp autumn weather was just gorgeous.
